What is a Cataract?

A cataract is the clouding of the eye’s natural lens, which is normally clear. This clouding interferes with the way light passes through the eye, leading to blurred or hazy vision. Cataracts can develop in one or both eyes and typically progress gradually over time.

The lens is located behind the iris (the colored part of the eye) and works to focus light onto the retina, helping you see clearly. As we age, the proteins in the lens can begin to break down and clump together, forming cloudy areas—this is what we call a cataract.

While aging is the most common cause, cataracts can also be linked to other factors such as:

  • Eye injuries or trauma

  • Certain medical conditions like diabetes

  • Long-term use of steroid medications

  • Excessive UV exposure without eye protection

  • Smoking

  • Family history of cataracts

Early on, cataracts may not cause noticeable symptoms, but over time they can lead to:

  • Blurry or dim vision

  • Glare and halos around lights

  • Difficulty seeing at night

  • Faded or yellowed colors

  • Frequent changes in glasses prescriptions

Cataracts are treatable, and modern surgical options offer safe, effective solutions with excellent visual outcomes.

What Are the Chances That I Will Get Cataracts?

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, more than half of all Americans will develop cataracts by the age of 80. Cataracts are a natural part of the aging process and are one of the most common causes of vision impairment in older adults.

The good news is that cataract surgery is highly effective. In most cases, it can restore vision lost to cataracts and may also reduce your dependence on eyeglasses—particularly if you choose advanced lens implant options.

Regular eye exams are essential for early detection and timely treatment, helping to maintain clear vision and overall eye health as you age.

Is Cataract Surgery Safe?

Yes—today, cataract surgery is one of the safest and most effective surgical procedures performed in the United States. With millions of procedures completed each year, it has a long-standing record of success, particularly in healthy individuals without significant pre-existing eye conditions. Advances in technology and surgical techniques have made the procedure not only highly reliable, but also life-enhancing for many patients.

At Canyon Eye Associates, we are proud to be among the first practices to offer Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery, a breakthrough in modern cataract treatment. This advanced technique enhances the precision and customization of the procedure by allowing key steps to be performed using laser technology. As a result, patients may experience increased safety, improved outcomes, and faster recovery times.

How Cataract Surgery Works

To improve vision affected by cataracts, the clouded natural lens of the eye is surgically removed and replaced with a clear, artificial lens known as an intraocular lens (IOL). This restores your ability to see clearly and reduces the visual disturbances caused by the cataract.

At Canyon Eye Associates, we utilize the latest surgical techniques and technology to ensure safe, effective cataract removal. Our procedures include advanced options for IOL placement, allowing us to tailor the treatment to your specific visual needs—whether you're seeking clearer distance vision, reduced dependency on glasses, or enhanced near and intermediate vision.

Most cataract surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis, meaning patients return home the same day. The procedure is quick, and recovery is typically smooth, with many individuals noticing improved vision within just a few days.
